How it works
European motorway vignettes, without the guesswork
A motorway vignette is a prepaid access pass that lets you drive on a country’s motorway network for a fixed period: 1 day, 10 days, a month or a full year — in Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova it reaches beyond the motorways. In most vignette countries it is now digital and linked to your licence plate, which cameras read automatically. Switzerland still sells a windscreen sticker alongside the e-vignette, and 2026 is Austria’s last sticker year.

Nine countries use a vignette system for cars; motorcycle rules differ by country:
There is no single European vignette
The most common mistake on a multi-country road trip is assuming one vignette covers the route. It doesn’t. Driving Germany → Italy via Austria and Slovenia requires two separate vignettes, with different operators and validity periods. Cameras read your plate automatically, so mistakes follow you home.
How does the rest of Europe work?
Not every country uses a vignette. If you know which system applies in each country on your route, you avoid surprises at the border.
