Hungary vignette validity and fines
When does it activate?
- All listed e-matrica products can start immediately once the plate is registered in the e-matrica system.
- The 1-day vignette expires at 23:59 on the purchase day, so a late purchase gives fewer driving hours.
What if you're caught?
- 1.ANPR camera or roadside control checks the plate.
- 2.The operator issues a substitute toll notice (pótdíj).
- 3.Unpaid cases can escalate to a higher administrative fine.
Before you drive in Hungary: e-matrica, fines & motorcycle rules
23:59 on the day of purchase, not 24 hours later. For late-day transit, the 10-day product is usually safer than the 1-day option.
Hungary is the only country in this guide with a written tolerance in the toll rules, and it does not work the way most summaries describe it. Ministerial Decree 45/2020 (XI. 28.) ITM does not grant 60 minutes of free driving. It says that no surcharge may be imposed on the basis of a check carried out in the 60 minutes before the start of validity of a correctly purchased entitlement (§ 11(3)).
In everyday terms the effect is similar: if a camera photographs your plate and you buy a matching e-matrica within the hour, the check falls inside the protected window and no pótdíj is due. The distinction matters in three situations:
Two further provisions limit exposure:
The pótdíj is not a fixed amount set by the operator. Under § 12(5)–(6) of the same decree it is a percentage of the D1 annual national e-matrica price, rounded to the nearest ten forint, so it moves every time that price is indexed:
HUF 27,790.HUF 95,730.If you were checked with a valid but cheaper category than the one your vehicle requires, you owe the difference (pótdíjkülönbözet) rather than the full surcharge (§ 13).
Hungary enforces motorway toll rules with a dense ANPR camera network and roadside checks. If your plate is not matched to a valid e-matrica, the operator issues a substitute toll notice.
HUF 27,790.HUF 95,730.Paying the surcharge does not replace the need to buy a valid vignette for the rest of the trip.
Roads requiring the e-matrica
The Hungarian e-matrica applies to all M-prefix motorways (autópálya) and M-prefix expressways (autóút). The full tolled network includes: M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, M7, M15, M19, M25, M30, M35, M43, M60, M70, M85 and M86.
Several specific sections are currently free: parts of the M0 ring road (between road 1 and M5, and between M4 and M3), a section of M4 near Budapest Ferenc Liszt Airport, a section of M30 between Miskolc-South and Miskolc-North, and a section of M60. These free-section boundaries change when new tolled segments open. Verify current status on the official Magyar Közút toll map at terkep.nemzetiutdij.hu before relying on any free-section assumption.
As of 1 January 2026, Hungary raised e-matrica rates by approximately 5% in line with annual inflation indexing.
Free roads — no e-matrica needed
All numbered national roads (főutak: 1–99 and 3-digit county routes), regional roads, county roads and all urban streets are completely free. In practical terms, each major motorway corridor has a free parallel route: road 1 runs alongside M1, road 7 alongside M7, road 5 alongside M5. These are valid alternatives that require no vignette, though at lower speed limits and longer journey times.
