Hungary vignette validity and fines

When does it activate?

  • All listed e-matrica products can start immediately once the plate is registered in the e-matrica system.
  • The 1-day vignette expires at 23:59 on the purchase day, so a late purchase gives fewer driving hours.
Full guide: how to activate your vignette →

What if you're caught?

  1. 1.ANPR camera or roadside control checks the plate.
  2. 2.The operator issues a substitute toll notice (pótdíj).
  3. 3.Unpaid cases can escalate to a higher administrative fine.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 1-day Hungary vignette mean 24 hours of driving?
No. It ends at 23:59 on the purchase day, so a purchase made in the evening covers only the remaining hours until midnight.
Do motorcycles need a vignette in Hungary?
Yes. Motorcycles use category D1M for the daily, 10-day and monthly products, at lower rates than D1. There is no separate motorcycle price for the annual vignette — it is sold as the D1 product (€169.55 (HUF 61,760)).
Do I need a county vignette for motorway transit across Hungary?
Usually not. County products are mainly for local or repeated driving in one area. For cross-country transit, the national 10-day or 1-month vignette is usually the practical choice.
Should I buy before reaching the motorway?
Yes. The plate must be registered before you rely on the vignette. The 60-minute rule is a narrow exception for camera checks, not a licence to enter first and buy later — and it does not apply at all if a control team stops you and you drive on without buying.
Does a trailer or caravan need its own Hungary vignette?
Yes. A towed trailer or caravan needs a separate e-matrica — the car's vignette does not cover it.
