D1 — car, max. 7 seats — M1/M1G passenger cars up to 3.5 t with at most 7 seats including the driver; a trailer towed by a D1 car needs no e-vignette of its own.

Hungary vignette validity and fines
When does it activate?
- All listed e-matrica products can start immediately once the plate is registered in the e-matrica system.
- The 1-day vignette ends at 23:59 on the selected day; a same-day purchase covers only the remaining hours.
What if you're caught?
- 1.ANPR camera or roadside control checks the plate.
- 2.The operator issues a substitute toll notice (pótdíj).
- 3.After 60 days from becoming due, the surcharge rises to HUF 95,730.
Before you drive in Hungary: e-matrica, fines & motorcycle rules
23:59, not 24 hours. Bought for today, it starts when payment takes effect; bought in advance, it starts at 00:00 on the selected day.Hungarian toll rules provide a specific 60-minute protection. Ministerial Decree 45/2020 (XI. 28.) ITM does not grant 60 minutes of free driving. It says that no surcharge may be imposed on the basis of a check carried out in the 60 minutes before the start of validity of a correctly purchased entitlement (§ 11(3)).
In everyday terms the effect is similar: if a camera photographs your plate and you buy a matching e-matrica within the hour, the check falls inside the protected window and no pótdíj is due. The distinction matters in three situations:
Two further provisions limit exposure:
The pótdíj is a civil toll surcharge under § 1, rather than an administrative fine.
The pótdíj is not a fixed amount set by the operator. Under § 12(5)–(6) of the same decree it is a percentage of the D1 annual national e-matrica price, rounded to the nearest ten forint, so it moves every time that price is indexed:

Hungary enforces motorway toll rules with a dense ANPR camera network and roadside checks. If your plate is not matched to a valid e-matrica, the operator issues a substitute toll notice.

Roads requiring the e-matrica
The Hungarian e-matrica applies to designated sections of M-prefix motorways (autópálya) and expressways (autóút), including M0, M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, M7, M15, M19, M25, M30, M35, M43, M60, M70, M85 and M86. Exceptions and exact boundaries matter: an M-prefix alone does not establish whether a section is tolled.
Do not assume the M0 ring road or the M30 section around Miskolc is free. The operator’s current toll-free list includes specific M4 and M60 sections, M8, M80 and specified M9 sections. Check the official toll-free sections and current map for the exact boundaries before travelling.
Free roads — no e-matrica needed
Ordinary main roads (főutak), regional and local roads and urban streets do not require an e-matrica. Roads 1, 7 and 5 offer alternatives to M1, M7 and M5, with lower speeds and longer journeys.
