How it works
European motorway vignettes, without the guesswork
A motorway vignette is a prepaid access pass that lets you drive on a country's highway network for a fixed period: 1 day, 10 days, a month, or a full year. Since 2023 the vignette is digital in most countries, so cameras read your number plate automatically. No windscreen sticker, no paper receipt to carry.
Which countries require a vignette?
Eight countries use the vignette system for cars and motorcycles:
There is no single European vignette
The most common mistake on a multi-country road trip is assuming one vignette covers the route. It doesn't. Driving Germany → Italy via Austria and Slovenia requires two separate vignette systems with different operators and validity periods. Cameras read your plate automatically, so mistakes follow you home.
How does the rest of Europe work?
Not every country uses a vignette. Knowing which system applies to each country you're crossing saves surprises at the border.
