How it works

European motorway vignettes, without the guesswork

A motorway vignette is a prepaid access pass that lets you drive on a country's highway network for a fixed period: 1 day, 10 days, a month, or a full year. Since 2023 the vignette is digital in most countries, so cameras read your number plate automatically. No windscreen sticker, no paper receipt to carry.

Which countries require a vignette?

Eight countries use the vignette system for cars and motorcycles:

There is no single European vignette

The most common mistake on a multi-country road trip is assuming one vignette covers the route. It doesn't. Driving Germany → Italy via Austria and Slovenia requires two separate vignette systems with different operators and validity periods. Cameras read your plate automatically, so mistakes follow you home.

How does the rest of Europe work?

Not every country uses a vignette. Knowing which system applies to each country you're crossing saves surprises at the border.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one EU-wide vignette I can buy? Popular
No. Each country has its own motorway vignette system and operator. You need to check each vignette country on your route separately.
What happens if I get caught without a vignette? Popular
Camera systems can register your plate and the penalty can follow later. Fine amounts and enforcement rules differ by country, so check the relevant guide before driving.
Does my rental car already have a vignette?
Sometimes, but only for specific countries. Ask the rental desk which countries are covered and keep the confirmation with your rental documents.
Should I check the official site or a reseller?
Use the official operator as the source of truth for rules and prices. Resellers may add convenience, language support or payment options, but compare before choosing.
I registered a vignette online. Can I drive right now?
It depends on the country and product. Some digital vignettes activate immediately, while longer validity products can have delayed validity rules.
Do I need a vignette for a campervan or motorhome?
Usually yes if the vehicle uses vignette motorways and is within the relevant weight class. Above 3.5 tonnes, heavy-vehicle toll systems may apply instead.
Can I avoid the motorway and skip the vignette?
In many countries, vignettes apply to motorways and expressways only. Avoiding them can work, but it often adds time and can be hard to follow near cities.
Is the vignette linked to my car or to me as a driver?
Digital vignettes are normally linked to the vehicle registration plate. If the plate or vehicle changes, check the operator rules before driving.
