Key tips for the corridor

1. Leaving Romania

Ensure your Romania vignette is valid before hitting the A1 or A3 motorways. Cameras are active at major border crossings like Nădlac and Borș.

2. Transiting Hungary

Hungary uses a fully digital system (E-matrica). Be very careful with vehicle categories; large SUVs or vans often fall into Category D2, which is more expensive than the standard D1 car rate. Check the Hungary vignette guide for details.

3. Arriving in Austria

Austria requires a digital vignette starting at the border (Nickelsdorf). Note: If buying a 2-month or annual vignette online, there is an 18-day delay before it becomes active. If you are leaving tomorrow, buy the 1-day or 10-day vignette, which can start immediately.

Practical route checklist

  1. Section Tolls: If you continue past Vienna towards the Alps (Innsbruck, Salzburg), remember that some tunnels require a separate section toll in addition to the vignette.
  2. Confirmations: Keep digital or paper receipts for all three vignettes until you return. Cameras use ANPR, but receipts are your only proof in case of a system error.
  3. Vehicle Class: If your vehicle is over 3.5t, you must switch to distance-based tolling (GO-Box in AT, HU-GO in HU).
